A song of the soul
There are certain songs that immediately pull your heart’s strings and touch you deep within. They succeed in taking you on an emotional and meaningful journey by painting a picture of the truth of life. One such song is “Aye Maalik Tere Bande Hum.” It was eloquently penned by the noted Indian lyricist, Pandit Bharat Vyas. This song is from the 1957 classic film “Do Aankhen Barah Haath” directed by V.Shantaram.
This song is not merely a song. It’s a prayer. Layered with deep meaning, it pleads for the strength to walk on the path of righteousness and refrain from evil no matter what. There is an acceptance of the inescapable fact that as a human we are bound to meet death at some point or another. It depicts the depth and strength of the human spirit and is an example of one-pointed unshaken faith placed in God.
Pandit Bharat Vyas highlights the fact that a human being is frail with a million shortcomings. We are definitely a far cry from being perfect. But because of God’s forgiveness and benevolence, the world exists as it does. He implores God to help carry all of one’s burdens and make the journey to reach him smooth.
It is also pointed along the course of the song that the world we live in is engulfed in thick impenetrable darkness. A human being soaked in great fear roams around deeply drenched in ignorance. There is a dearth of the light of peace and happiness. But the strength of God’s aura is so strong that even a moonless night glows bright. An invocation is directed towards God to cast his light and glory over all of human-kind. This will pave a path of hope which is the most essential thing to motivate an individual to keep going in life.
When there are a million atrocities being committed around, the song begs God to embrace and hold a human being firmly. Pandit Bharat Vyas writes that when faced with evil, may one reply with kindness. And may the bitter desire for revenge be transformed into a step ahead for love. A prayer is fervently made for any thought of enmity to be completely banished from all of our minds.
The visuals of the song are powerful and prove to be an accurate match for the soulful lyrics. It portrays individual humility as all the characters bow down in prayer in order to rescue an ailing man’s fate.
Even though the song was written way back in time, it is still relevant today as the human condition remains exactly the same. The truth has not changed. This song is a moving testament of placing faith in a superior power of the universe to guide, protect and safeguard one and all.
On the occasion of his death anniversary, we at Earth Films pay a tribute to the legacy of Pandit Bharat Vyas. His exceptional contribution defined the music of Indian Cinema. This song amongst many others written by him, stood the test of time stirring generations, proving that time does not tarnish classics.
